The non-periodic motion is a type of motion that does not repeat itself in fixed intervals of time. For example, our eye movement is non-periodic motion, we do not rotate our eyes in a periodic fashion, we move left and right as required in a random way. On the other hand, the motion of a pendulum is a periodic motion as it repeats itself after a fixed interval of time. In this article, we discuss 10 examples of non-periodic motion.
Examples of non-periodic motion
- Bouncing of ball
- Local wind patterns
- The motion of aircraft in clouds
- Speaking
- Dancing
- The motion of waves in a sea
- Mechanical bull ride
- A soccer player
- Eye movement
- Curling stone
Let us look at each one of the examples in detail to understand non-periodic motion.
Bouncing ball: When you drop a ball from a height, the ball starts bouncing the moment it hits the ground. The first time it bounces, it rises to a certain height, but in the second and third bounces, the height keeps on decreasing. The repetition of the motion is not uniform. The same action is not repeated. So can call this example non-periodic.
Local wind patterns: Local wind patterns or wind speeds are very difficult to predict. They are not periodic and vary from time to time. This makes it difficult to prepare against such non-periodic motion.
The motion of aircraft in a cloud: You might have witnessed turbulence in a flight. The motion is not periodic, the plane is tossed in a non-periodic way. You cannot predict the motion in such cases.
Speaking: While we speak we do not generally speak at a constant speed. We tend to increase or decrease our speed of speech to express our emotions better.
Curling stone: In a game of curling a stone is made to slide across a surface. The speed of the stone will decrease after release from the hand due to the sliding friction with the surface. In fact, all cases of free-rolling or sliding can be considered as an example of non-periodic motion.
Dancing: A dancer does not repeat a single step through the complete dance. There are many dance moves and each move requires a different speed and technique. So the motion of the dancer is not uniform.
The motion of waves in a sea: The waves of the sea is an example of non-periodic motion that you can visualize easily. When you see at a distance the waves will be very big but as they come near you they tend to die down.
Mechanical bull ride: In a mechanical bull ride, the bull is made to make sharp turns. The unpredictability of this movement makes the rider fall. If this movement was periodic then the rider would be able to guess and balance accordingly.
A soccer player: In any game, a person is not moving continuously. In a game of soccer, a player may be idle or running, or passing a ball. So the motion is non-periodic. The below animation will make it clear.
Eye movement: We try to show different emotions with our eyes. We don’t move it at the same speed all the time. Intense situations the speed might be high. In a relaxed mood, the eye movement speed will below.
