Rocket Launch – Unbalanced Forces in Motion

What's Happening?

• Before launch, a rocket experiences **balanced forces**—gravity pulls it down, and the launchpad holds it up.
• At liftoff, engines ignite and push gas downward at high speed.
• This creates a massive **unbalanced upward force (thrust)** that overcomes gravity.
• As a result, the rocket **accelerates upward** into the sky.

This is a perfect example of Newton’s 3rd Law: **For every action, there’s an equal and opposite reaction.**
