Addition Definition

Definition of addition: Addition is a technique where we combine things and count them together as one large group. It is usually signified by the plus(+) symbol. It is one of the four basic operations of arithmetic(addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).

The addition of two or three numbers results in a single number, which we call a sum. For example, if we have two numbers: 4 and 5. If we add them 4 + 5 we get the sum 9.

What are addends?

Addends are the numbers added, and the result or the final answer we get after the process is called the sum.

Where do we use addition?

Addition is a basic arithmetic operation that we use in our day-to-day life. In our grocery store, the computer adds the prices of all things to give us the bill, we add the value of the coins to find out the total amount of money we have, etc.

Methods of Addition

  1. Column method of addition – regrouping and non-regrouping
  2. Compensation method
  3. Decomposition addition
  4. Give and take addition
  5. Place value addition
